ECOFASHION IN AUSTRALIA BLOG

The other day I reviewed Green is the New Black. It’s a great book, but a bit light on Australian recommendations since it’s for a UK audience. I’ve tried to find some good eco-fashion resources for you. Remember, it’s the same principles you’d apply to buying anything else eco-related.
Try to buy from sources which:
Eco-fashion stores
Your best bet is to check out the listings under “Fashion and Clothing” at The Green Pages. There’s 4 pages of businesses listed!
My favourites include etiko for sneakers and Bamboo Body for casual clothes. I’d love to buy something from Bird Textile one day, but those are more like investment pieces – expensive, but meant to last you for years and years!
Local and handmade
When you buy handmade goods directly from the person who makes them, not only are you supporting Australian small businesses, you know that you’re not supporting sweatshops. You’re less likely to find organic cotton and the like, but you’re more likely to be getting a one-of-a-kind garment made from recycled fabrics.
Chain stores
A lot of chain stores are including limited ranges of clothes made from organic cotton. There’s a very good chance that they’re still using sweatshop labour, and their organic claims aren’t backed up by any kind of certification. But I don’t believe in waiting for perfection – I’d rather give some encouragement and support to anyone who is starting to do the right thing.
So I sometimes buy from the organic cotton ranges at Target (t-shirts and underwear) and Billabong (t-shirts and shorts). I also managed to get a pair of limited edition organic cotton jeans from Just Jeans, but sadly they don’t make them anymore. Perhaps because there wasn’t enough interest from the public?
We need to send a message to larger stores about what we want from them, or they’ll assume that we don’t really care. If you do buy organic from a chain store, follow up by sending them a letter (with your receipt attached to prove you’re a paying customer) saying how thrilled you are that they’ve used organic fabrics, and by the way when will they be getting certification for their claims? and when will they be providing better conditions for their workers? They’re already testing the waters – let’s show them that we like it and we want more.
And…
If you’ve made a great ethical fashion purchase, please please please share the details in the comments so we can all buy some eco-friendly threads! Tell us what you bought and where you got it from (and the city you’re in, if it’s not an online shop).

- Reduce waste, packaging, pesticides, or anything else that’s bad for the environment
- Reuse materials, or allow you to get a lot of reuse from the item
- Recycle materials that would have been thrown out otherwise
